First of all, there’s an American adaption of Death Note and second of all Adam Wingard (Your Next, The Guest) is directing????
As reported by Variety the first to be casted for the American adaption of the Japanese manga is Nat Wolff as Light Yagami. Nat Wolf is primarily known for his two performances in John Green’s adaptions The Fault in Our Stars and Paper Towns. While they are in final negotiations, it’s pretty much a lock.
Death Note was an instant hit when the manga was released in Japan in 2003 along with its anime adaption that lasted 37 episodes. Nate Wolf is set to play Light Yagami, who discovers a book that can kill anyone whose name is written on as he attempts to cleanse the world of evil and become God. A very high concept that also intrigued Japan to create a trilogy of live action adaptions.
It comes to no surprise that Warner Bros. is attempting an anime adaption as Hollywood has had a fixation on many anime properties over the years such as Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and Cowboy Bebop. Will Death Note be the film to jump start the anime adaption trend after the past financial failures of Speed racer and Dragon Ball: Evolution?
